Celebrating Its Many Languages and Cultures

Lafayette Shows Its Internationalist Spirit

Lafayette held its annual International Night April 28, a much cherished event every year. More than 300 attended, as students, parents and teachers joined in celebrating the many languages and cultures represented at the school. Lafayette’s internationalist spirit was present in abundance, as it did not matter if you were from Nepal, or the Congo, or Puerto Rico or Iraq or Buffalo, all were warmly welcomed. Songs and dances represented different peoples, as the crowd cheered and encouraged all. One song, written and performed by a Lafayette graduate and dedicated to all his teachers, expressed the social love of many present — “I am who I am today because of all of you.” Participants included students and teachers, solo and group performances, all making their contribution to the celebration. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a wide variety of food, most of it prepared by Lafayette parents and teachers. And of course, pizza! The place was abuzz with the many languages spoken, as people discussed the various performances. It was not lost on anyone that the state testing that recently concluded does not measure or value the internationalist quality that is Lafayette High School. Many expressed their hope and conviction that International Night must continue long into the future.
